Ginninderry has been recognised as a future sustainable community by achieving a 6 Star Green Star – Communities rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.
Joint venture partners, the Land Development Agency and Riverview Developments, today welcomed the announcement that Ginninderry had achieved the highest rating possible for a community under the national Green Star – Communities rating system.
LDA CEO David Dawes said only a handful of projects nationally have received this rating.
“Ginninderry is the first community in the ACT and the capital region to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating,” Mr Dawes said.
“This internationally recognised certification is a testament to the high-quality features and detailed planning that will make Ginninderry a liveable, environmental and community focused development.”
Riverview Developments CEO David Maxwell said the community was being developed with a vision of creating a place underpinned by leading-edge design and development practices.
“Environmental awareness and sustainability are at the heart of the vision for Ginninderry,” Mr Maxwell said.
“Sustainability is not a single idea, it’s about investing in conservation and the community to create opportunities for education, employment and innovation. This is achieved through a combination of initiatives throughout the planning, design and construction of Ginninderry. The size, location and long development timeframe of the project provide a great opportunity to trial various technologies and initiatives.”
Ginninderry, which is bounded by the Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek, will be an industry leader in water sensitive urban design. Through a network of bioretention swales, wetlands and basins to capture, cleanse, recycle and infiltrate water created on site, the development aims to not adversely impact those existing waterways.
New technologies are being explored that will help householders reduce the amount of energy they use. Solar panels will be mandated for all homes and demand management systems will be installed to help educate new residents on how they can more efficiently use power within their homes.
“We are planning neighbourhoods that put people first – through an urban design layout that allows people to walk and cycle safely through a network of well-designed path and access ways both within Ginninderry and into the broader West Belconnen region. We want more people out of their cars and exploring the wonderful natural environment that we have at Ginninderry,” Mr Maxwell said.
Green Building Council of Australia Chief Executive Officer Romilly Madew said Ginninderry’s 6 Star Green Star rating represented world leadership in the design and delivery of sustainable communities.
“This rating highlights that the know-how, technology and collaborative thinking is found right here in the ACT – and Ginninderry is certainly a world-class example of why sustainable thinking can deliver more for people, the community and the environment. The project team’s achievement is truly outstanding, especially when we consider the project stretches across four suburbs and two states,” Ms Madew said.
Ginninderry will consist of four suburbs – three in the ACT and one in New South Wales (subject to rezoning approval), with the first of these being Strathnairn and Macnamara.
With the potential to deliver up to 11,500 new homes accommodating about 30,000 people by 2055, it will set a new benchmark in liveability by building a community that provides diverse, affordable and inclusive places to live, work and play.
The first land sales release for Ginninderry is planned for early 2017.
