Stepping up sustainable operations

Mirvac Group has received a 6 Star Green Star – Performance v1 rating for its office asset, Sirius in Canberra, becoming the first building in Australia to increase its Green Star rating from a 5 Star Green Star – Office Design rating to a 6 Star Green Star – Performance rating.

This new rating represents ’world leadership’ in sustainable building operations and was achieved through Mirvac’s strong asset management and investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy systems, in close collaboration with major tenant at Sirius, the Department of Health.

Sirius, located at 23 Furzer Street, Woden in Canberra, now holds a 6 Star Green Star – Performance and a 6 Star NABERS Energy rating, and is the first major property in Australia to achieve a 6 Star NABERS Energy rating without Green Power.

The asset’s outstanding environmental performance was recently recognised at the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers Awards in London, winning the Facility Management Award and a high commendation in the International Project category. This follows two important industry awards in Australia, including the Facility Management Industry Energy Efficiency Award and the Best Commercial Building Energy Efficiency Project by the Energy Efficiency Council.

Mirvac’s Group General Manager Sustainability & HSE, Paul Edwards, said, “We are thrilled to have taken Sirius to a world leadership 6 Star Green Star rating, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our This Changes Everything sustainability strategy.

“Our investment, asset and facility management teams have gone above and beyond to deliver a high performing asset, and the accolades we have received for Sirius to date are testament to this.”
Chief Executive Officer of the Green Building Council of Australia, Romilly Madew, said the 6 Star Green Star rating represents a ‘watershed’ moment for the property industry.

“The industry has become increasingly sophisticated in the way assets are managed and this exceptional achievement from the team at Mirvac demonstrates that a smart, sustainable design can lead to even better, more sustainable outcomes in operation.

“Mirvac has shown true commitment through its sustainability strategy in demonstrating how Green Star ratings for design and construction can deliver a world leading Green Star – Performance rating.

“Both the design and operations team deserve applause for their efforts; Sirius stands tall among just a handful of buildings around the country that have achieved world leadership ratings for operational performance.”
