Assessing local government with the Net Zero Momentum Tracker

30 Sep 2020

When it comes to tackling the climate challenge here in Australia, some of our most active advocates can be found at the grassroots level. Our membership includes 33 local councils, and these councils are home to over a quarter of our population, they are hives for sustainable innovation and inspiration.

During World Green Building Week, our Policy Manager Tim Wheeler recorded a podcast with Coral Bravo. Coral leads the data gathering and analysis for ClimateWorks’ Net Zero Momentum Tracker project, an initiative of ClimateWorks Australia and Monash Sustainable Development Institute.

The Net Zero Momentum Tracker monitors Australia’s progress towards net zero emissions across key sectors of the economy and assesses them against the target of net zero emissions by 2050, which is crucial to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement goals.

The Tracker aims to be the one central place that we can track the momentum of Australia’s net zero emissions commitments across these sectors:

  • property
  • banking
  • local government
  • retail
  • transport
  • superannuation

The Project’s local government report assesses the emissions reduction commitments and activities of Australia’s 57 largest local governments. This month, we invite you to listen into our latest instalment of The Voice, to hear Tim and Coral dive into how government is getting involved, at a local level.
