New guide simplifies sustainable homes for volume builders

Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has launched a new practical guide designed to help residential volume builders achieve Green Star Homes certification with greater confidence, consistency and efficiency.

Developed through extensive industry engagement and informed by early Green Star Homes projects, the Practical Guide to Green Star Homes works alongside the Standard and submission guidelines to demystify certification and help builders, contractors, consultants and trades deliver high-performing homes at scale.

Green Star Homes is Australia's leading rating tool for new homes, promoting fully electric, renewable-powered homes that are healthy, resilient and energy efficient. The certification pathway is specifically designed for volume home builders, allowing them to certify a repeatable design or product line and then deliver certified homes more efficiently across multiple projects.

The guide also connects building decisions with benefits residents can experience; year-round comfort, healthier indoor conditions, lower running costs and greater resilience to a changing climate, while handover guidance helps builders explain how residents can use their homes effectively.

“This guide is about helping builders turn ambition into action,” GBCA Chief Executive Officer Davina Rooney said.

"Volume builders have told us they want practical support that shows not just what is required for certification, but how to achieve it in the real world. This guide provides that roadmap."

The guide includes:

  • Detailed explanations of Green Star Homes categories, credits and requirements, including the outcomes each credit aims to achieve, supported by photos, clear graphics, practical guidance and top tips.
  • Practical advice for every stage of a Green Star Homes project.
  • Defined roles and responsibilities at each building stage for designers, project managers, consultants, site supervisors, suppliers, contractors and trades.
  • Guidance to help project teams engage early and avoid costly redesigns.
  • A step-by-step overview of the Green Star Homes certification process, from pre-registration through to submission and promotion.
  • Clear information on collecting and managing evidence required for certification.
  • Advice on communicating the value of Green Star Homes to buyers.

GBCA hopes the guide will help accelerate the uptake of higher-performing homes across Australia by making it easier for builders to embed sustainability into standard designs and business-as-usual practices.

“The guide outlines how demand is growing for homes that are healthier, more energy efficient and better prepared for a changing climate. Builders need practical tools they can put to work immediately,” Ms Rooney said.

"This practical guidance helps builders understand what good looks like, how to involve the right people at the right time, and create a repeatable pathway to Green Star certification."

The Practical Guide to Green Star Homes is available now from the GBCA website.
