The Green Building Council of Australia congratulates Chief Minister Andrew Barr and the re-elected Labor-led government.
GBCA CEO, Davina Rooney said GBCA looks forward to continuing to work with the Barr Government as they seek to achieve their target for the ACT of net zero emissions by 2045.
“We remain committed to supporting the ACT Government’s sustainability journey, including building on priorities identified in the ACT Sustainable Buildings Pathway to help homes and buildings meet leading environmental standards.”
GBCA also acknowledges the leadership of outgoing Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction, Rebecca Vassarotti, in advancing the Sustainable Buildings Pathway. Her efforts have been instrumental in shaping Canberra’s trajectory toward a sustainable and climate-ready built environment.
Ms Rooney said the ACT Government has shown great leadership by, for example, adopting National Construction Code 2022 standards and banning new gas connections, reinforcing the region’s commitment to sustainability.
“These policies, along with the Powering Canberra initiative and the Integrated Energy Plan, show the ACT is serious about electrifying its future and embracing green solutions,” Ms Rooney added.
The Government’s plan to deliver 30,000 new homes by 2030 offers a great opportunity to ensure that new developments exemplify climate-ready urban design.
GBCA also welcomes the $1 billion hospital project planned for Canberra’s north.
“The development of critical social infrastructure is an ideal platform to embed sustainability best practice, ensuring community wellbeing through future-proof design,” said Ms Rooney.
GBCA looks forward to continued collaboration with the ACT Government and industry partners to create sustainable homes and communities that will benefit future generations in Canberra.
