The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has been recognised as a 2025 Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leader, taking out the top award in the Property & Construction category.
The award celebrates GBCA’s Green Star Future Focus program, which is accelerating decarbonisation, electrification and positive social outcomes across Australia’s built environment.
So far, more than 700 buildings valued at over $20 billion have registered under the program and are collectively set to avoid at least 4 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
“Green Star Future Focus is reshaping the way buildings are designed and delivered in Australia – from commercial offices and shopping centres to schools, hospitals, apartments and logistics facilities,” GBCA Chief Impact Officer Jorge Chapa said.
“It’s helping developers, governments and communities deliver healthier, more resilient places, while unlocking the financial, environmental and social value of sustainability.”
GBCA’s submission highlighted Green Star’s growing influence in investment decisions, government procurement, and building regulations, as well as its role in catalysing market demand for electrification, biodiversity protection, and healthier homes.
“Our sector has a critical role to play in reducing emissions and creating lasting change. It’s an honour to see our work recognised alongside other sustainability leaders,” Mr Chapa said.
“This recognition is a testament to our incredible team and the thousands of project teams using Green Star to create better outcomes for people and the planet.”
The AFR Sustainability Leaders list celebrates Australian companies that are making real progress in tackling sustainability challenges and delivering measurable business value along the way. It recognises both disruptive innovators and established organisations transforming their operations to meet the demands of a net zero economy.
