Green Star Buildings consultation

Heritage Lanes, QLD, Mirvac. 6 Star Green Star – Buildings v1.

Help shape the next version of Green Star Buildings

Launched in 2020, Green Star Buildings is a holistic rating tool designed to meet the challenges of the next decade. It was the first rating tool in the Future Focus program, which set out to redefine Green Star for the next generation of communities, buildings and fitouts.

Our proposed evolution on the Green Star Buildings rating tool will ensure continued alignment with GBCA strategy on:

  • Climate action, to build on learnings and successes from the current Climate Positive Pathway
  • Nature to align with expected nature roadmap
  • Circularity, to align with GBCA strategy, embed learnings from industry and meet global trends

Green Star Buildings v1.1

Green Star Buildings v1.1 addresses feedback on individual credits and provides technical amendments, clarifications and improvements identified by project teams who have used the tool.

Critical changes include:

  • Climate Positive Pathway: Mandatory requirement for all-electric buildings and revised energy consumption benchmarks; Larger focus on grid-interactive buildings; Amendments to upfront carbon to align with the proposed NABERS Embodied Carbon methodology; Addition of refrigerant GWP limits; Amendments to offsets requirements due to challenges in market.
  • Nature category: A rebalancing of points and the introduction of key nature-related metrics.
  • Circularity in life cycle: A shift towards encouraging circular thinking in building design and construction, and metrics to measure outcomes.
  • Stepped points: More opportunity for project teams to be recognised for outcomes in certain credits.
