The City of Sydney’s Gunyama Park Aquatic & Recreation Centre was designed to support the high-density urban living in Green Square, offering much more than a pool and sports field.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre (GPARC), certified in 2022, is rated 5 Star Green Star – Design & As Built v1.

Sustainability is at the heart of this world class facility which is home to the largest pool
complex built in Sydney for over 20 years.

The centre not only serves the community as an impressive recreational facility, but it does so in a way that drastically reduces energy consumption.

A large photovoltaic roof installation, combined with cogeneration systems, produce electricity for the centre and park operations. It also feeds surplus green energy into neighbouring buildings providing more benefit to the local community. The heat by-product of the co-generation system is used to warm the pool water and earth berms surround the building to provide insulation during Sydney’s hot summers.

"Gunyama Park was built to be efficient from the ground up. We have linked Gunyama to the city’s network of Green Square facilities to balance energy peaks and troughs. We share harvested stormwater, bi-product heat, co-gen and solar electricity with our adjacent creative centre, library and parks," said Chris McBride, Design Manager at the City of Sydney.
