What role can local governments play in the transition to net zero and how are some already leading the way?
In October, GBCA and Property Council of Australia launched Every Building Counts - For Local Governments, a report which details 19 recommendations for local government that will accelerate the transition to a more sustainable built environment.
Every Building Counts was launched at a joint event with our friends at the City of Melbourne who launched the Retrofit Melbourne plan. This comprehensive plan outlines a range of initiatives that council and industry can take to improve the performance of Melbourne’s existing commercial buildings.

This report details how sustainable finance mechanisms can enable a range of opportunities for the real estate sector to address climate, resource and biodiversity issues.
At the same time, the Australian Government is undertaking consultation on a Sustainable Finance Strategy for Australia which aims to provide an ambitious and comprehensive framework for reducing barriers to investment into sustainable activities. GBCA will be providing input to this consultation.

Three examples of policy development this month are the Australian Government’s consultation on Australia’s Future Gas Strategy, the Tasmanian Government releasing its Future Gas Strategy and Woollahra Municipal Council in NSW exhibiting a proposed amendment to its development control plan relating to residential gas usage and solar energy system controls.
