Making the invisible visible

How inclusive is your air?

We now have the technology to measure and understand more and more about the indoor spaces where we spend so much of our time.

We understand how they perform when it comes to energy. We measure temperature and humidity. Increasingly, we also understand how the design and operation of buildings can impact the health and wellbeing of the people inside them.

But there's one thing that's still largely invisible to the people inside them: the air they’re breathing.

In the last week of October, the Safer Air Project is inviting organisations across Australia and around the world to change that by taking part in Making the invisible visible, an annual campaign encouraging organisations to measure display their indoor air quality.

For facilities managers, building owners, engineers, sustainability professionals and others working across the built environment, monitoring indoor air quality may not be a new idea. What is less common is making that information visible to the people who actually use those buildings.

Why visibility matters

Making indoor air quality visible isn't simply about collecting building data. It's about giving people access to information about the environments they share.

As Safer Air Project CEO and founder Plum Stone explains:

“For people living with disability or chronic health conditions, just having the information enables a more informed assessment of risk. Without it, we can’t properly understand the spaces we’re entering or make choices about our health.”

What does taking part involve?

If your organisation already monitors indoor air quality, the campaign is an opportunity to commit to make that information visible by October 2027. Simply display real-time data in a foyer, office or shared space - explain what you're measuring and why. When you join you’ll receive a campaign toolkit has everything you need to get started.

Organisations are also encouraged to share their involvement on social media, with their networks, and in newsletters, to help build awareness of this important public health issue, and showcasing work they're already doing to create healthier indoor environments.
