New GBCA Chair sets a course of engagement and innovation

28 Aug 2025

Last month we welcomed Anthony Boyd as the new Chair of Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). Anthony brings with him two decades of industry experience – including three on our Board - and a deep commitment to advancng sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready buildings and places.

Building with purpose

With a career grounded in the built environment; most recently with GBCA member and partner, Frasers Property - Anthony has seen firsthand the potential impact of buildings and places that are sustainable and people-centred.

When interviewed in 2021, soon after taking the helm as CEO of Frasers Property, Anthony spoke about leadership, opportunity, and better futures, "What we want is to always be striving toward, creating the kind of change that lifts people up." It's a sentiment that remains with him as he enters as Chair of GBCA’s Board.

“I have a natural affiliation with the projects I’ve been part of, especially those I’ve seen through from acquisition to completion, both in Australia and overseas. The most memorable ones are those designed and delivered with the end user at the heart of every decision.

“That means ESG must be a core component from the outset. It’s about creating places that feel welcoming today and remain environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable well into the future, said Anthony

“One project that stands out for me is Fairwater in western Sydney. It’s home to Australia’s largest residential geothermal heating and cooling system and the homes within consume 21 percent less electricity than comparable suburbs. Importantly, residents are socially engaged, have access to nature and walkable infrastructure – wellbeing and connection are at the heart of Fairwater,” said Anthony.

A defining appointment at a pivotal time

As Australia contends with climate targets, housing challenges, evolving regulations, and increasing demand for transparency and accountability in building performance, Anthony’s appointment comes at a crucial time, and it’s this environment that sets the scene of his vision for GBCA.

“I feel very honoured to be appointed as Chair, to be following in the footsteps of Adrian Pozzo, and the other previous Chairs is a real privilege and also a big responsibility. We have such a great Board and management team, so maintaining our high-performing culture is always a priority.

“Beyond that, we’ll continue delivering on our strategic objectives - enhancing our rating tools and processes, expanding our education platforms, and strengthening our advocacy on key issues. The key to success will be deeper engagement and collaboration with our members and partners, especially through ongoing investment in digital and technology systems,” said Anthony.

Anthony also highlighted the importance of balancing aspiration with commercial reality, “I’ve always had such admiration and respect for GBCA’s work - it’s a personal and professional highlight to be part of the Board and help maintain the positive momentum across our diverse membership base.

“Our role is to help our members navigate a complex and changing landscape. We need to lead with ambition, while ensuring our solutions are practical and scalable,” said Anthony.

A vision of inclusion and innovation

Anthony says policy and regulation have a critical role to play in shaping Australia’s building stock for the future. GBCA’s policy priorities include residential disclosure, carbon transparency, and progression to a circular economy - all aimed at driving inclusive market growth.

“Consistency of disclosure, whether for residential buyers or commercial tenants, is playing an increasingly important role and there’s also huge opportunity for better policy around circular economy and social infrastructure. But regulation must be developed in partnership with industry. We need leadership that understands commercial impacts while encouraging innovation and ambition,” said Anthony.

And despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about the future of sustainable buildings and places in Australia, “We have a unique advantage thanks to the collaborative and ambitious nature of our industry.

“Hearing people talk about what’s possible is always exciting and it’s hard not to be optimistic when you see the quality of our membership and their projects coming through the pipeline. I can’t wait to see this ambition continue to grow and to watch our capability evolve to meet the challenge,” said Anthony.
