Since the Green Building Council of Australia’s inception, growing consumer awareness of the benefits of sustainability through media and education has been essential for driving change.
A lot of focus is placed on industry, but we also know that people and communities hold influence when it comes to shifting the way we live. Every single office building and warehouse could be designed as sustainable, healthy, resilient, and efficient — but 53% of Australia’s built environment carbon emissions come from our homes. If we are to meet Australia’s targets, in line with The Paris Agreement, we need to address the emissions associated with homes, now
But we can also confidently say that the tides are turning — so don’t lose heart.
Consumer awareness is rapidly shifting to focus on not only the environmental benefits of sustainable homes, but also the financial and health benefits. This shift has become so prominent that sustainable living is now a feature on mainstream TV—an unmistakable indicator of where consumer preferences are headed.
‘Growing Home’ a series on Channel 7 with Logie winner Jamie Durie, is a project we have been watching take form for the past few years. Jamie set out with a ‘simple’ mission, to build a ‘house without compromise’ that is kind to the planet — a mission we can all agree is not simple, but one that is undoubtedly rewarding in every sense of the word, as you will see.
We are proud to be supporting Growing Home and Jamie as he navigates the complexities of sustainable design and construction. GBCA’s role has come as a great opportunity to grow awareness around our work, educating industry and consumers, while promoting sustainability in the built environment. We are excited to be part of a broader conversation around sustainability and climate resilience with Australians.
This type of mainstream awareness is something we have worked hard for, and we hope it will ultimately benefit the planet, people and industry alike.
Walking the talk, as they say, is the only way we will meet our climate goals for a more resilient future. So, we hope you tune in to Growing Home for the next three weeks and join us on the journey towards a more climate resilient, sustainable future.
Since 2003, GBCA has been actively driving change by shifting mindsets and promoting practical steps toward a more sustainable built environment. While the journey has been challenging, the momentum is undeniable. Consumer awareness and positive change aren’t just on the horizon — they’re already on our doorstep.
