The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) welcomes the announcement of Prime Minister Morrison’s new Ministry and its very future-focused portfolio line up that we believe will help address the issues that matter most to Australians.
GBCA CEO Romilly Madew said the Prime Minister’s priority on stability and the issues of most concern to households was particularly welcome.
“We thank the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP for his service to the nation as Prime Minister and for the attention and support he gave to key policy areas including cities, infrastructure and transport,” Ms Madew said.
“It is very encouraging to see Prime Minister Morrison continuing this work with the appointment of the Hon Alan Tudge MP as Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population.
“Our cities are growing and the recognition of this by creating a dedicated portfolio for population, and bringing it into the Cabinet, is smart, forward-thinking policy.
“Infrastructure and Transport will continue to have a high profile – as they must – under the responsibility of Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Michael McCormack.
“We look forward to supporting Ministers Taylor and Price in their respective portfolios of Energy and the Environment.
“Australia’s built environment offers a truly significant opportunity to both reduce emissions and improve energy security through smarter, high-performance buildings whose footprint on the environment and the electricity grid can be both carbon neutral and energy positive as we push ahead with new practices and technologies.
“Our nation is a world leader on sustainability in the built environment, particularly for commercial buildings, and this warrants ambitious policy directions from our federal leaders. At the end of the day, it is families and communities who will benefit from better and lower energy cost homes and businesses.
“Prime Minister Morrison has a deep understanding of the property industry and as Treasurer he introduced a range of significant measures to improve housing affordability in Australia. We congratulate him on his elevation to Prime Minister and hope for a period of certainty and stability to come.
“We also congratulate new Treasurer, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, and thank him for his previous work in the Environment and Energy portfolio. We thank Minister Fletcher for his engagement with us in the previous Urban Infrastructure and Cities portfolio and congratulate him on his elevation to Cabinet.”
