Our inaugural GBCA Star Award goes to...

19 Apr 2017

We are delighted to announce GBCA Events Manager Siobhan Rees as the first recipient of our GBCA Star Award - an initiative that recognises the outstanding talent, passion and vision of our staff members here at the organisation.

"Siobhan is consistently loyal, reliable, goes above and beyond and is dedicated to the GBCA’s values. She conducts herself with poise, grace and professionalism at all times, even when dealing with difficult situations."

This is just one comment of praise about Siobhan's commitment to our organisation and how she always ensures our events are dynamic, engaging and of course, run seamlessly. We sat down with her to glean tips and tricks for success as the first winner of our GBCA Star Award.

As the inaugural winner of the GBCA Star Award, what does this mean to you?

I’m honoured! The GBCA Star Award recognises individual staff, but our events are a true team effort. I’m very grateful for the support I receive from my colleagues when coordinating an event and believe that this award also acknowledges their contributions to making our events a success.

Describe your day-to-day role at the GBCA

Every day is different, which is one of the reasons I find events so exciting. Depending on what events are coming up, my day could consist of researching topics and speakers, coordinating briefings, drafting run sheets, or liaising with production partners.

What do you love most about your role?

I love having the opportunity to create moments that matter. Our events bring together professionals in the sustainable built environment to share knowledge, collaborate and network. I believe these events are powerful occasions at which we can shape the sustainability agenda, and being in a position to facilitate this is very rewarding.

What are some of the biggest challenges you come up against and how do you overcome this?

Keeping abreast of all the latest knowledge and trends within the sustainability industry can be challenging, but I am lucky to be surrounded by a team of experts at the GBCA who are always more than willing to help me understand and identify topics of interest that we can form an event around.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I believe I’m an authentic and reliable leader. I encourage constant and clear communication, which is essential due to the fast-paced nature of events, and also strive to foster a participative team environment that enables input and collaboration across the business and with our stakeholders.

What are some of the key opportunities of working within the events team?

A role in the events team offers great opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in both events and sustainability. There’s the chance to get into the ‘nitty gritty’ details of organising an event, while working with our members and inspiring speakers who are experts in their fields.

Did you know we're on the look out for a new recruit to join our events team? If you want to work with someone as driven and dedicated as Siobhan, now's you're chance!
