South Australia

Growing South Australia's circular economy

GBCA is partnering with Green Industries SA to explore circular economy opportunities for South Australia’s built environment sector. A discussion paper was developed to inform workshops, stakeholder engagement and the development of a final report that identifies opportunities and presents recommendations to move towards a circular built environment in SA, to be released in early 2023. The Prince's Terrace Adelaide, Bowden

The Prince's Terrace Adelaide in Bowden was the first residential development to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating in Australia, with the project boasting 50% less energy use than a typical urban dwelling. The development was overseen by Defence Housing Australia, the Prince’s Trust Australia, and Renewal SA. Read more here.

Royal Adelaide Hospital

Royal Adelaide Hospital became the first large-scale hospital complex in Australia to achieve a 4 Star Green Star – Healthcare As Built rating and is part of a steadily expanding group of public projects that deliver shared value through sustainable building practice. The use of natural light and greenery is a key design focus. The hospital’s orientation is also optimised to increase natural light and minimise solar thermal load. Read more here.

Queensland 

Sunshine Coast University Hospital

The Queensland Government’s $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) became the largest public healthcare facility in Australia to achieve a 6 Star Green Star - Healthcare v1 Design and As-Built rating. It was designed with a ‘green spine’ made up of large outdoor rooms and courtyards that run down the middle of the hospital creating a healing space for employees and patients. Read more here

New South Wales 

NSW Department of Education

Along the banks of the Parramatta River stands 105 Phillip St, an architectural marvel with a special story. The city’s first 6 Star Green Star rated building and home to 1,800 employees at the NSW Department of Education, the office building was recently heralded Australia’s 2000th Green Star certified project. Sydney Modern Project, Art Gallery of NSW

The Sydney Modern Project will expand the Art Gallery of NSW’s exhibition space and transform the way visitors engage with art. The Green Building Council of Australia has awarded the project a 6 Star Green Star - design rating, making it the first public art museum in Australia to achieve the highest environmental standard for design. Victoria 

Fishermans Bend

In 2018, the Victorian Government released the final Framework and planning controls for Australia’s largest urban renewal project at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne. The controls express for the first time the Government’s commitment to a 6 star Green Star – Communities rating, and notably, scales up the ambition in the draft Framework to require all buildings over 5,000 square meters to be built to a 5 Star Green Star Design & As Built standard.
